10 Jan A Very Happy New Year To All!

A very Happy New Year to all!

The New Year has started, as it finished, with much in the news about racism.  I have been a Liverpool football club supporter since they won the 1965 FA Cup Final, the first football match I remember seeing, but find myself disappointed in the way that the Suarez / Evra dispute has been dealt with.

There is much to be learnt from this, not least the matter of communication.  I would like to think few people would disagree that racial abuse is unacceptable under any circumstance.  To say that names we find abusive in this country are acceptable terms in Uruguay is no argument.  It would appear that people within LFC knew that Suarez used such terms but did not think to communicate with him.  Suarez does not appear to have familiarised himself with acceptable conduct both in this country and the international football scene.  Whilst distasteful, perhaps what we say in private is a matter for our own conscience, but what is done in public, whether it is in the office or on a football pitch needs to be dealt with.

Diane Abbott, the first female black MP in the UK, no doubt subject to racism herself at some point in her life, has also started the year with criticism for recent remarks.  She has said that her comments on Twitter have been taken out of context as the numbers of characters are limited.  Another reason to be aware of what we say and how we say it.

Stephen Lawrence was murdered on April 22nd 1993 and by all accounts the case will continue to provoke dispute even though two men have now been convicted of his murder.  Nearly 19 years later has anything really changed?  The time lapse is a mere “drop in the ocean”, in terms of social awareness and technological advancement progress is prodigious, but racism remains inherent in too many people.
